Safe Zones by Platform
exact pixel margins, not vibes

Every vertical platform covers part of your frame with its own interface: usernames, captions, CTA buttons, progress bars and share icons. Placing text without accounting for that is the most common and most avoidable error in social video, and it is invisible in your editing timeline.

Our 5-step process

  1. 01

Brief and audit — we review your goals, past performance and raw material before touching a timeline.

  2. 02

Hook extraction — every asset is scanned for the highest-retention 1-3 second opener.

  3. 03

Native edit — pacing, captions, safe zones and sound are tuned to the destination platform.

  4. 04

Revision rounds — two included rounds with timestamped comments, no ticket queue.

  5. 05

Delivery pack — masters, verticals, captions, thumbnails and a posting brief in one drop.

Case example

A fitness brand's rep-count overlays were sitting behind the TikTok caption stack on every video. Moving the overlay up 300 pixels into the safe core took one template change and lifted average watch time by 11 percent, because viewers could finally read the number the video was about.

Pricing anchor

Our monthly retainers start at $2,495/mo for 15 shorts and scale to $3,995/mo for 30 shorts plus long-form support. Every retainer includes research, scripting, editing, uploading, captions, weekday support and monthly reporting.

Design to the universal core

If a video will be posted to more than one platform — and it almost always will — design text and key graphics inside a centred 780×1080 region of the 1080×1920 frame. Anything inside that box survives every major vertical surface without repositioning.

Reserve the outer margins for footage and atmosphere. Faces can extend into them; information cannot.

The bottom margin is bigger than you think

TikTok stacks the username, the caption text, the music ticker and sometimes a CTA button across the lower fifth of the screen. When a caption expands, it can consume 480 pixels. Reels and Shorts are less aggressive but still cover 380 to 420 pixels.

The practical rule: nothing you need read should sit in the bottom 480 pixels of a 1920-tall frame. Move burned-in captions to the vertical centre or just above it, where they are also closer to the viewer's eye line.

Test on a device, not in the timeline

Editing software shows a clean frame. The platform does not. Before finalising a new format, upload one draft to each destination as a private or scheduled post and screenshot it on a real phone. Check both an expanded and a collapsed caption state.

Do this once per format, not once per video. Ten minutes of testing removes a recurring error from every video that follows.

Frequently asked questions

What is the safe zone for TikTok?

Keep essential content out of the top 130 pixels, the bottom 480 pixels and the right 180 pixels of a 1080×1920 frame. The bottom margin is the one people underestimate because it grows when a viewer expands the caption.

Are safe zones the same on Reels and Shorts?

Close but not identical. Reels covers roughly 420 pixels at the bottom and 150 on the right; Shorts covers about 380 at the bottom with a lighter right rail. Designing to the strictest set — TikTok — keeps one master usable everywhere.

Where should burned-in captions sit?

Vertically centred or slightly above centre, inside the 780×1080 safe core. That position clears all platform UI, sits near the natural eye line, and survives being reposted to a platform with different chrome.

Do safe zones apply to 4:5 and 1:1 video?

Less severely, because feed placements overlay less of the frame, but the bottom 150 pixels can still be covered by captions and interaction rows. Keep a 100 to 150 pixel margin on all sides as a default.

How do I check safe zones quickly?

Build a safe-zone overlay PNG for your editing timeline and keep it on a locked top track while working, then hide it before export. Combined with one real device test per new format, that removes the problem permanently.

Does the safe zone change when ads run?

Yes. Paid placements add a CTA button and sometimes a headline bar, consuming additional bottom space. For paid creative, treat the bottom 520 pixels as unusable rather than 480.
