Shoot for the crop if you can

The cheapest fix is upstream. Recording in 4K gives you a 1216×2160 crop window with no upscaling, which means vertical deliverables that look native rather than soft. Framing subjects centrally with headroom, and keeping graphics and product out of the outer thirds, makes reframing nearly automatic.

If you cannot control capture, prioritise 4K on the primary camera only. It solves most of the problem for the shots that carry the video.

Three ways to handle a two-shot

First, stacked split-screen: both speakers in vertically stacked windows. It works for interviews and podcasts and keeps reaction visible. Second, alternating punch-ins driven by who is speaking, which reads more like a scripted edit and needs clean audio to trigger cleanly. Third, a wide letterboxed centre band with captions above and below — acceptable for a beat or two, weak as a default.

What to avoid is a static centre crop on a two-shot. You get two half-faces and a viewer who leaves in the first second.

Auto-reframe, then fix it

Automatic reframing tools track a subject reasonably well in single-speaker shots and badly everywhere else. Use them for the first pass, then scrub for three specific failures: the pan that starts before the subject moves, the jitter when two faces are in frame, and the moment the tracker locks onto a background person.

Manual keyframes on the ten to fifteen percent of shots that fail is faster than reframing everything by hand and produces a materially better result than trusting the tool.

How much of the frame do I lose going 16:9 to 9:16?

About 68 percent of the pixel area. A 1920×1080 source yields a 608×1080 crop window, which is below 1080p width and needs upscaling. Shooting 4K solves this: the equivalent crop is 1216×2160, comfortably above vertical delivery resolution.

Should I use auto-reframe tools?

As a first pass, yes — they handle clean single-speaker shots well and save real time. Always review, because they consistently fail on two-shots, fast movement and busy backgrounds. Manual keyframes on the failing ten to fifteen percent of shots is the efficient workflow.

Is letterboxing better than cropping?

Occasionally. A centred letterbox with captions above and below preserves composition and is fine for a wide establishing shot or a data-heavy screen recording. Used as a default it wastes vertical real estate and looks like recycled content, which viewers punish.

How do I handle screen recordings in vertical?

Do not crop them. Scale the recording to the vertical width and place it in the upper two-thirds with a speaker or caption band below, or zoom into the specific UI region being discussed. A cropped full desktop is unreadable on a phone.

What about 4:5 instead of 9:16?

4:5 (1080×1350) retains far more of the horizontal frame and still occupies most of a feed on Instagram and LinkedIn. For repurposed horizontal footage it is often the better compromise, though it underperforms 9:16 in full-screen surfaces like Reels and Shorts.

Can reframing be automated for a whole library?

Partially. Batch auto-reframe plus a human correction pass is how we process large archives economically. Fully unattended batching produces a usable result on maybe half the shots, which is not a standard we would publish against.
