After Effects vs Motion
how much motion design a personal brand actually needs

Most personal brands need far less motion design than they think — animated captions, a lower third, a subscribe nudge, maybe a chart. The After Effects vs Motion question is really about who will touch the file after you: After Effects is the universal handoff format, Motion is the fast Mac-native option that almost nobody else can open. We build client motion packages in After Effects and deliver them as Premiere-friendly templates, so this page reflects what actually gets used on founder and creator accounts.

Case example

A finance creator's editor was building every caption animation from scratch in After Effects — beautiful, and forty minutes per short. We audited a month of output and found 94% of the motion design was three reusable elements: word-pop captions, a stat callout and an end card. We rebuilt those three as parametric MOGRT templates with his fonts and brand colours; per-short motion work dropped to under five minutes and the look got more consistent, not less. The tool was never the bottleneck — the absence of a template system was.

Pricing anchor

Our monthly retainers start at $2,495/mo for 15 shorts and scale to $3,995/mo for 30 shorts plus long-form support. Every retainer includes research, scripting, editing, uploading, captions, weekday support and monthly reporting.

The honest scope of personal-brand motion design

Strip away the showreel fantasy and a face-led channel needs: a caption animation preset, a name/title lower third, a stat or quote callout, an end card, and occasionally an animated chart. That is a one-time build of four or five templates, not an ongoing motion design practice. Any tool can do it; the question is where the templates live and who can maintain them.

This is why we build client motion packages as MOGRTs out of After Effects: the founder's editor (or ours) drops them onto a Premiere timeline and changes text without ever opening AE. The motion design happens once; the usage happens daily.

Choosing between them

Choose Motion if you are a Final Cut-based solo creator on a Mac who will build and maintain your own five templates. It is fast, $49 once, and its Final Cut integration is genuinely elegant. Accept that almost no freelancer or agency will touch the files.

Choose After Effects if anyone else will ever touch your motion graphics — it is the handoff standard, the template marketplace is enormous, and every motion designer on earth can open an AE file. For personal brands past the solo stage this is not a preference, it is plumbing. And if the honest answer is 'I just need captions that do not look default' — that is a caption preset problem, not a motion design purchase.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need After Effects for good animated captions?

No. The word-by-word caption look is achievable in Resolve's Fusion, Premiere's graphics, dedicated caption tools, or a one-time After Effects MOGRT you never open again. Buying AE to make captions is buying a studio to boil an egg — pay someone to build the preset once instead.

Is Motion worth learning in 2026?

For a solo Final Cut creator who enjoys building their own graphics, yes — it is cheap, fast and well integrated. As a career or collaboration skill, no: the market asks for After Effects, and Motion files are a dead end outside your own machine.

What motion graphics does a personal brand actually need?

Five reusable elements: caption animation preset, lower third, stat/quote callout, end card, and one chart or diagram style. Built once, templated, used daily. Anything beyond that is production value your retention graphs rarely pay for.

Can I use template marketplace packs?

Yes, with two warnings: budget real time to brand them (fonts, colours, timing) or they read as stock, and check the licence covers sponsored content. The sameness risk is real — three creators in your niche may be running the same pack.

How do agencies deliver motion graphics?

As templated MOGRTs or Resolve macros with documented brand values — the client or their editor changes text and colours on the timeline without opening the motion tool. You should own these templates; they are part of your brand system, not ours.

After Effects vs Canva/CapCut animations?

Different jobs. Canva and CapCut animations are fine for stories and reactive posts. Pillar content that defines how your brand looks — the intro, the lower third, the recurring formats — deserves templates built in a real motion tool, once, properly.
