Best Video Editing Software in 2027: Honest Comparison
28 October 2026 · 7 min read · By Media Strategy Lab

There is no single best editor. The right tool depends on what you make, how often, which computer you use and whether a team needs to collaborate.
This comparison is based on how our editors use these tools for client work. Prices and plans change often, so check each official site before buying.
Quick picks
Best all-round professional editor: Adobe Premiere Pro. Best free professional option and colour work: DaVinci Resolve. Best for Mac-only creators who want speed: Final Cut Pro. Best for fast social clips on phone or desktop: CapCut. Best for editing talking videos and podcasts by text: Descript.
Adobe Premiere Pro
Premiere Pro is the industry standard for agencies and teams. It works on Mac and Windows, integrates with After Effects and Adobe's asset tools, and has text-based editing for interviews.
Downsides: subscription only, and it can feel heavy on older laptops.
- Good for: agencies, YouTube, client work.
- Less good for: beginners who only post phone clips.
DaVinci Resolve
Resolve offers a capable free version with editing, colour, audio and effects in one app. The paid Studio version adds more advanced features.
Downsides: steeper learning curve and higher hardware demands.
Final Cut Pro
Final Cut Pro is optimised for Apple hardware and is very fast for solo creators. It is Mac and iPad only, which limits mixed teams.
CapCut
CapCut is quick for short-form: templates, auto captions and trend-friendly effects. It is excellent for volume social content but less suited to long, complex projects or strict brand control. Check the terms and availability in your country.
Descript
Descript lets you edit video by editing a transcript, which is ideal for podcasts, webinars and talking-head content. It is less suitable for cinematic or heavily designed edits.
Software or an editor?
The tool matters less than the time and skill behind it. If editing eats hours you should spend on your business, outsourcing is often cheaper than it looks.
