How to Choose an Instagram Growth Agency (2026)

The Instagram growth market splits cleanly in two: agencies that produce content and agencies that manufacture follower numbers. The second group is cheaper, faster, and will damage your account.

These are the nine questions we would ask if we were buying, and the answers that should end the conversation.

The nine questions

  • How do you generate growth? If the answer involves following and unfollowing, engagement pods, or any form of automation, walk away — it violates platform terms and suppresses reach.
  • What do you produce each month, and can I see the count in writing?
  • Who films, and what does that require from me? A real answer includes a recording cadence.
  • Which metrics will you report on? Saves, sends, watch-through and profile-to-site clicks should appear. Follower count alone is a warning.
  • Show me three accounts you grew and the content you made for them. Anonymised is fine; vague is not.
  • What happens in month one if I give you no footage?
  • Who owns the account and the content? You should, without exception.
  • What is your revision policy and turnaround?
  • What does month six look like if this works, in commercial terms rather than follower terms?

Bought or automated followers do not just fail to convert — they poison your audience signal, so the algorithm shows future posts to people who will never engage. It is one of the few marketing mistakes that is genuinely hard to reverse.

Red flags

  • Guaranteed follower numbers. Nobody can guarantee reach on a platform they do not own.
  • Requesting your password rather than being added as a collaborator or through Meta Business Suite.
  • Case studies with follower graphs but no content shown.
  • Reporting that never mentions saves, sends or profile clicks.
  • Contracts with no asset count, no revision limit and no exit clause.
  • A pitch that leads with 'the algorithm' and never mentions your offer.

What good growth work actually looks like

It is unglamorous. A monthly recording block, 20–30 platform-native assets, a small number of repeatable formats tested against each other, hooks rewritten from real drop-off data, and a call to action that stays the same long enough to be recognised.

Growth then follows from retained attention rather than from any tactic. Reels that hold viewers get shown to more people; that is the entire mechanism.

  • Four to five posts a week is the practical cadence threshold.
  • Faces outperform logos at every budget level.
  • Saves and sends now carry more ranking weight than likes.
  • A consistent recurring format beats a new idea every week, because it lets the platform classify who your content is for.

Budget expectations

In 2026, content-led Instagram growth runs roughly $1,500–$3,000 a month for produced content and publishing, and $3,000–$6,000 where filming, heavier editing and community management are included. Anything under about $800 a month is scheduling, not growth.

Media Strategy Lab runs content-led Instagram growth for founders and brands in the US, UK, Canada and the EU; our team has delivered over 3 billion organic views. Send us your account and target and we will tell you honestly whether content or offer is your constraint.

Frequently asked questions

How do I choose an Instagram growth agency?
Ask how growth is generated, what gets produced monthly in writing, who films, which metrics are reported, and who owns the account and content. Reject any answer involving automation, engagement pods or follow-unfollow.
Are guaranteed follower numbers a red flag?
Yes. No agency controls the platform, and guarantees are almost always met with purchased or automated followers, which corrupt your audience signal and suppress future reach.
How much does an Instagram growth agency cost?
Roughly $1,500–$3,000 a month for produced content and publishing, and $3,000–$6,000 where filming, heavier editing and community management are included. Under about $800 a month you are buying scheduling.
Should I give an agency my Instagram password?
No. Add them through Meta Business Suite or as collaborators so access is role-based, auditable and revocable.
How long before an Instagram agency shows results?
About three months for format and hook data, six months for compounding growth. Judge early months on watch-through and saves rather than follower count.
