Hook Structures
seven patterns, measured

The first 1.5 seconds decide whether the rest of the video exists. Most teams treat the hook as whatever the speaker happened to say first. Treating it as a designed component — written, tested and swappable — is the single largest performance lever available in short-form.

Our 5-step process

  1. 01

Brief and audit — we review your goals, past performance and raw material before touching a timeline.

  2. 02

Hook extraction — every asset is scanned for the highest-retention 1-3 second opener.

  3. 03

Native edit — pacing, captions, safe zones and sound are tuned to the destination platform.

  4. 04

Revision rounds — two included rounds with timestamped comments, no ticket queue.

  5. 05

Delivery pack — masters, verticals, captions, thumbnails and a posting brief in one drop.

Case example

A consulting client ran three hook variants on twelve concepts. Result-first hooks beat curiosity gaps on ten of twelve, by an average of 9 retention points at three seconds. They stopped writing curiosity hooks entirely and their baseline retention rose without any change to production quality.

Pricing anchor

Our monthly retainers start at $2,495/mo for 15 shorts and scale to $3,995/mo for 30 shorts plus long-form support. Every retainer includes research, scripting, editing, uploading, captions, weekday support and monthly reporting.

The seven structures

Problem statement names the pain in the viewer's language. Pattern interrupt opens on visual or verbal incongruity. Specific number leads with a concrete figure. Contrarian claim contradicts an accepted belief. Direct callout addresses a named audience. Curiosity gap poses a question with a delayed answer. Result-first shows the outcome before the method.

None is universally best. Problem statement and result-first are the most reliable for service businesses; pattern interrupt wins raw attention but leaks viewers at five seconds if the body does not deliver.

Write hooks separately from the video

Write five hooks before recording, not after. It changes what you capture — you will record the specific number or the result shot you need instead of hoping it exists in the footage.

Keep hooks under about eight words of spoken audio. Anything longer runs past the two-second decision window and the structure stops functioning as a hook.

Test variants, not opinions

Produce one core edit and three hook variants. Variants cost 25 to 45 percent of the original edit because the body is unchanged, which makes testing genuinely affordable. Publish or run them against each other and let three-second retention decide.

Log the results by structure over time. Within a couple of months you will know which two structures work for your specific audience, which is far more valuable than any general best-practice list — including this one.

Frequently asked questions

How long should a video hook be?

One point two to two seconds of spoken content, roughly eight words. The viewer's decision window is short, so a hook that takes four seconds to arrive is not a hook — it is an intro, and intros are the most common cause of high three-second drop-off.

Which hook structure performs best?

In our data, pattern interrupt scores highest raw three-second retention at around 44 percent, but result-first and problem statement produce better completion and conversion. Optimise for the outcome you care about rather than the highest early retention number.

Should the hook be spoken or on-screen text?

Both, saying the same thing. Most feed viewing starts muted, so the on-screen text carries the hook; the spoken line carries it for sound-on viewers. Mismatched text and audio hooks confuse both groups.

How many hook variants should I test?

Three per concept. Fewer gives you no real signal, more starts splitting your distribution too thin to compare. Because variants reuse the body edit, three costs roughly 1.7 times a single edit rather than three times.

Can I add a hook to an existing video?

Yes, and it is cheap. A new opening line delivered to camera or as an on-screen text card over the strongest visual, cut onto the front of an existing edit, costs a fraction of a re-edit and often revives an underperforming video.

Do hooks work the same across platforms?

Structures transfer, tolerances do not. TikTok punishes slow openings hardest, LinkedIn tolerates a slightly slower authority-led setup, and YouTube long-form allows a cold open of several seconds if it promises a clear payoff.
